Problems with ODBC Connector - Can't Remove..??

MySQL @ November 13, 2013   Views:0

I'm using FileMaker Server (a database application) which has a feature called External SQL Sources where you can bind 3rd party databases and use the data from within FileMaker.

The FM documentation for this feature recommends using the MySQL ODBC Connector 5.1.7, so I installed that, setup a DSN on the Windows server, and configured it successfully within FileMaker at that point.

Now I've come back a week later and the connection from FM to MySQL is lagging horribly and apparently timing out. Now I come back to the Windows Server and the ODBC driver software is all messed up for some reason.

When I try to configure or remove the existing DSN I get an error...

Driver's ConfigDSN, ConfigDriver, or ConfigTransaltor failed
Errors Found:
Invalid Attribute String

If I tried to add a new one it would let me through the process, but then when I tried to submit it I'd get that same error.

I did some Googling and discovered that this was apparently a known bug with the MySQL ODBC Connector 5.1.7..?? Ok, great, thanks FM for recommending that one. No big deal, I'll try 5.1.13 and see if maybe that'll work ok. Well, I can't.

At this point I can Uninstall the MySQL ODBC Connector via Add/Remove Programs, and it does seem to remove itself and deletes its directory out of Program Files. The DSN is still there, though, but when I tried to remove it I get an error...

"The setup routines for the MySQL ODBC 5.1 Driver ODBC driver could not be found. Please reinstall the driver."

Ok, fine, makes sense since I uninstalled it. At this point I rebooted the server, downloaded the 5.1.13 version, and installed it. When I install it, though, I get this error at the end...

Error 1918.Error installing ODBC driver MySQL ODBC 5.1 Driver, ODBC error 13: Could not load the setup or translator library. Verify that the file MySQL ODBC 5.1 Driver exists and that you can access it.

Then I can Abort, Retry, or Ignore. Retry just keeps giving me the same thing, Abort kills the install, of ocurse, and Ignore completes the install, but then I end up with the same errors as before trying to remove the existing DSN or add new ones.

So then I uninstalled the 5.1.13 driver, which once again removed itself from Program Files and is no longer in Add/Remove programs.

Again, though, the DSN still exists, and when I try to remove it I get that same error as before about needing to reinstall the driver. When I say OK to that, though, now I get a similar, but slightly different error...

Driver's ConfigDSN, ConfigDriver, or ConfigTranslator failed
Errors Found:
Component not found in the registry

When I search regedit for "mysql" I am finding some things that have to do with the DSN that was configured and that is stuck, but I'm not sure if I should just delete that stuff and hope it releases the DSN so I can remove it or what..??

I'd appreciate any assistance I can get resolving this issue. Thanks!

Hello Andrew,

Thanks for showing interest in Mysql Connector/ODBC.
You can look at below bug's "[25 Aug 2010 11:53] Bogdan Degtyariov" comment to delete old key:

And this issue is fixed in newer 5.1 releases so please use them afterwards.
